How to ask your bridesmaids to be in your wedding

How to ask your bridesmaids to be in your wedding

Your now fiancé has popped the question, you’ve said yes and now your mind turns to wed planning. You can begin to think of how you will ask your best friends to be there on one of the most important days of your life. Your friends have been with you through thick and thin but this doesn’t mean that you should have every one of your friends in your bridal party.

Choose carefully those of your friends who you feel will support you, help keep you calm and be super organised with any tasks you give them as your future bridesmaids.

If you really feel that some of your friends are great friends but will potentially cause you more stress with the wedding planning and on the day, then my suggestion would be to consider if this is someone you want to be by your side throughout this process. I know this probably sounds incredibly harsh but believe me I have seen it too many times where friends take over, provide too many opinions and/or decide not to be helpful all of which adds to your stress and time management.

Now down to the lovely part; how to ask your bridesmaids to be in your wedding.

One way of looking at this is to view it as another type of proposal and there is some fabulous options for bridesmaid proposal gifts from bridesmaid invitations to gift boxes and it truly depends on what your friendship group is like. I love Katie Loxton, I think her designs and gifts are simple but elegant at the same time and she offers a Bridesmaid pouch which is the perfect way to ask your friend to be your bridesmaid but is also a lovely keepsake for the wedding day and beyond.

Bridesmaid proposal boxes are becoming increasingly popular and there are some great options that can be personalised to make them a really thoughtful gift. From candles to picture frames, the boxes can be customised to you and your bridesmaids and often come in luxurious looking boxes with added touches such as ribbons adding to the glamour. Other than cosmetics, you could always ask your friends to be your bridesmaids with some confectionery such as personalised cookies or chocolates. I know that these are not something they will keep forever, as they will definitely get eaten, but it makes a lovely bridesmaid gift idea. I have used Biscuiteers in the past for birthday and other celebration gifts and they do a delicious personalised bridesmaid biscuit card:

For personalised chocolate, Thorntons offer a box of alphabet truffles that you can spell out your bridesmaid question and this can be found here:

If you and your girl tribe enjoy a drink or two then why not personalised a bottle of their favourite tipple, making it personal to each one. There are a couple of ways to do this, buy a bottle of their favourite alcoholic beverage and then order some personalised labels with the words “Will you be my [bridesmaid, maid or matron of honour]?” that you can then apply to the front of the bottle.

Often, you can get each individual name put on different labels so it will make an extra special gift idea. If you’re not into DIY then opt for a prosecco or champagne bottle that the company can personalise on your behalf.

There are lots out there by a couple of my favourites are:

If you’re tying the knot abroad then why not ask your girlfriends to be your bridesmaids with a gift that they can also use or take along to your destination wedding? A tote bag is always a well-received gift, especially one that is personalised with their name and if you already know your destination and date why not put that on the bag too. A tote bag is also an eco-friendly option for your bridesmaids to continue using long after your wedding day when they’re doing the grocery shop!

The bags can also incorporate your wedding theme or could have a nod towards your destination; think tropical flowers for a beach wedding or a cityscape if you’re opting for a city wedding.

Check out Bidbi for some organic and Fairtrade options:

Take the stress out of your bridesmaids wondering what to wear on the morning of your wedding by using a comfy and stylish robe to ask your bridesmaids to be part of your big day. A satin robe is a great way to make them feel pampered and chic whilst they’re getting ready on your wedding day and is a gift they can use beyond the wedding.

They also look fabulous in photos of your bridal prep with a glass of bubbly in hand! There are options to get them personalised but sometimes gift doesn’t always need to be personalised so you can choose whichever option works best for you and your wedding party. It is also worth bearing in mind, that if you are having a destination wedding at a particularly hot time of year, then the hotel or villa that you are getting ready in may have strong AC which can make you all feel a little chilly, so a gorgeous robe is a perfect addition to making sure everyone feels comfortable.

Georgina Keeley is a British designer who has created a beautiful and luxurious bride and bridesmaid dressing gowns and you can find them here:
For those on more of a budget there are some great high street options that aren’t tacky such as Victoria’s Secret

Of course, you really don’t have to do anything elaborate to ask your gal pals to be your bridesmaids if you want to keep things simpler. As we have been in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, if you can’t see you, girlfriends, in person why not send them a lovely card or postcard through the post,
asking them to be your bridesmaid? There are some beautiful options out there and some even come with the option to include a photo, so you can really personalise it to each friend. I have used Papier a few times now for stationery items and their service has always been good and they offer some lovely options both with photo upload options or choose from one of their pre-designed options.

You can see the options here:

As a final option, why not head out for a lovely meal and drinks with your girlfriends and ask them in person to be your bridesmaids.

It is a great excuse to get dressed up, head out and enjoy yourselves with some beautiful food and wine.

Also, after you’ve asked them, you’re already out and ready to party so it’s a nice way to continue the celebrations, celebrate getting engaged and all the wedding planning can begin for your wedding day.

A few of my favourite hot spots in London that would work really well for this type of bridesmaid proposals are Bob Bob Ricard where every table comes with a
‘press for champagne’ button (always handy!), Sketch with its bubble gum pink interiors it’s the ultimate girly backdrop for your celebrations and for some amazing views across London why not head to The Shard where you have a selection of different restaurants and bars to choose from all with a dramatic skyline as your setting.

Choosing your bridesmaids is a lovely experience and there are so many ways you can ask them to be in your wedding whether you go for something luxurious or more budget-friendly, your girlfriends will love the thought and effort that has gone into however you choose to ask them.
